The European Fusion Development Agreement & JET

The European Fusion Development Agreement & JET

In Europe, fusion research is done under the coordination of the European Commission. About 750 million EUR is inscribed in the budget of the Commission's Sixth Framework Program (2002-2006) for this particular post. Between the European Union on the one hand, and the various countries of the Union as well as Switzerland on the other association agreements have been negotiated. Swift progress is made as various laboratories offer their particular expertise to tackle specific problems: some specialize in the improvement of confinement, while others focus on heating, plasma-wall interaction, ... Concepts are first tested on relatively small machines and are, if successful, installed on JET. JET is the flagship of European fusion research.
